iOS 17’s StandBy mode is perfect for you if you’re the kind of person who always keeps your phone docked on your desk at work or beside your bed. Since the official release of the most recent version of iOS, you can enable StandBy mode on your iPhone by placing it horizontally (or in landscape orientation) on a MagSafe, Qi-based wireless charger, or cable charger. This transforms the normally blank lock screen of your iPhone into an interactive, glamorable window of widgets.
The feature is rolling out now to the most recent iPhone models. If you have iOS 17 downloaded, here’s How to use StandBy Mode on iOS 17.
How to use StandBy mode on iOS 17
1. Turning on Standby Mode: In iOS 17, StandBy mode is activated by default. In case it’s not, or if you wish to disable the function, navigate to Settings, select StandBy, and flip the activation toggle. This tab also has two other settings for notifications and Night Mode, which changes the color hue from vivid to red in darkened environments. This latter setting allows you to have important alerts in StandBy mode, and when you tap on one, it expands to the preview, just like the lock screen on an iPhone.
2. Charging your Phone: Any compatible iPhone that has been rotated to a horizontal orientation and is charging can use the StandBy mode. The iPhone can be charged using a conventional lightning cable, a Qi-enabled wireless charging pad, or a MagSafe charging dock. When these conditions are satisfied, your iPhone lock screen will automatically switch to a widescreen status hud that displays the temperature, time, and date. This is known as StandBy mode.Location awareness is one important benefit of using a charging dock that has earned the MagSafe certification. If you want to dock your iPhone on many MagSafe accessories—for example, a desk, a bedside table, and a kitchen table—the iPhone will recognize and show the StandBy mode settings you have configured for each.
3. Customizing standby Mode: Similar to the iPhone home screen, two columns of interactive widgets are shown in the first panel. To customize your experience, you can add, remove, and rearrange widgets on this panel by tapping and holding it. You may also enable Widget Suggestions and Smart Rotate.A photo clock with the time and your selection of pre-existing photo albums or photo categories (people, pets, and nature, for example) are displayed in the second screen. You may choose which images to display by tapping and holding this panel.A larger clock with several styles to pick from is displayed on the third panel.
4. Notifications and Alerts: When the iPhone is docked, incoming messages and notifications will show up if Show Notifications is enabled in the StandBy settings. To increase privacy, you can turn on Show Preview on Tap Only, which will require you to unlock the device using Face ID or Touch ID in order to see the entire message.
